LISTS: a monologue

Winner of the 2020 Molly R. Hatcher Prize for Women & Gender Studies

When tasked to compose a monologue, I referred immediately to a note on my phone dedicated to things that men have said to me that have made me feel shame. The list is a vault of moments of rage / memories with strangers that have culminated to compromise my ability to trust my own body and behavior.

Coincidentally, while in the midst of this writing pursuit, I was asked to talk about the time in my life I had felt the most angry. To my surprise, I neglected this list of barbaric burns and thought of the man that I love most in the world.

I have been hurt by many men in my life. I have been hurt by other people too. I love lists. I love being a woman. I am learning to love my body.
